Our hand sanitisers are SANS 490 approved.
What does that mean for you?
The COVID pandemic has changed our lives in more ways than we realised, to the point where sanitising our hands every 5 minutes is the norm. With the surge of hand sanitisers being readily available, how can we determine if the sanitiser we are using is not toxic to us or actually contains the correct active ingredient at the right percentage to help prevent someone from contracting COVID?
This is a question the SABS decided to answer. The South Africa Bureau of Standards (SABS) is the national standardisation board for South Africa. The aim of the SABS is to ensure the quality of products produced is consistent in order to protect the consumers of South Africa.
One standard that is aimed at protecting consumers during our COVID pandemic is the SANS 490. The SANS 490 is a set of standards specifically designed for hand sanitisers. The standard goes into what type of alcohol can be used and eliminates ingredients such as acetone, methanol and methylated spirits which are toxic if absorbed through the skin. Before a hand sanitiser can be approved by the SABS to bear the SANS 490 mark, the product goes through a series of tests and audits from the product itself to the labelling and packaging of the product. This is to ensure the product and manufacturer adheres to the guidelines set out and developed by the SABS, its technical committee and other regulatory authorities.
